Ghajn Tuffiena, the “Apple's Eye” of Malta

Malta is an island in the Mediterranean sea. It is about 50 miles south of Sicily. Thus, the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean are present along its coastline. While Malta has numerous beaches for visitors, the Ghajn Tuffiena is one of the more popular places to visit. This spot is located south of another of Malta's popular beaches, the Golden Sands beach.

Ghajn Tuffiena has a nickname, the “Apple's Eye.” The reason for this is that this beach has red sand rather than the standard white sand you would find in many areas in the Mediterranean.

One of the most prominent things about this beach is that it has a steep staircase leading down to the water's edge. This does make a beach visit here a little challenging especially if you have limitations. But it also gives Ghajn Tuffiena an advantage because it is often less populated than other beaches in the area. The reason is because this beach is surrounded by cliffs.

The beach also has a historic feature. There is a watchtower at the top of the cliffs that was built in the 1600s. It was once used as a World War II lookout. Now, it is open to the tourists. In addition, the beach is now the destination of yoga and meditation retreats.

Part of Ghajn Tuffiena also has a nudist section. While this area is secluded, you can still wander into it unexpectedly if you are exploring the beach. But there are some rocks that you have to navigate to get to this particular area.

Rentals of beach equipment are available on the beach itself. So, you don't have to make the long haul back and forth up the stairs carrying stuff. You will also find a wide variety of food vendors on the beach itself.

Water sports such as jet skiing and water skiing are also activities that are available at the shore.

Ghajn Tuffiena is one of Malta's red sandy beaches to visit if you are on the island. It is a short distance from the Golden Sands beach which has its own attractions. In addition to history, the beach is one of the least populated places to visit in Malta.
