Time Travel: Year 4015 After the Death of Earth

Let's take a trip to the year 4015, so 2,000 years hence

What do we see?

We see the life on earth, gone! Replaced by new life, seeded by extraterrestrials or terrans

Nuclear radiation killed almost all surface life

Over 400 nuclear power plants, melted down, like Chernobyl and Fukushima

This is the story of a planet that died, because of 'Service to Self' types

This video is about the aftermath of Planet X, but after being on the first page of YouTube results, it was yanked, just because I didn't mention Planet X

I thought it was obvious that it was about Planet X

What else would cause all the tsunamis?

The 10 Types Of Uni Student That You're About To Meet

The+10+Types+Of+Uni+Student+That+You%E2%80%99re+About+To+Meet

Heading to university and nervous about who you're going to meet? Here's the definitive guide to the 10 types of student in existence and whether or not you should be friends with them.

N.B. You're one of them too.

#1. The gap year jerk.

The+10+Types+Of+Uni+Student+That+You%E2%80%99re+About+To+Meet

The gap year tragedy: the bracelets tell you all you need to know (Picture: Getty)

How to spot: Travel pants from Cambodia, bracelets from Belize and dreads from every hairdresser's worst nightmare.

Background: Spent the last 12 months (at least) travelling the world and only got back the day before freshers' week started. Wants to hit the road again as soon as the Christmas holidays roll around.

Most likely to say: 'Can't make drinks tonight, I'm flying to Namibia straight after my seminar to see my girlfriend.'

Make friends? Yes. Will be useful for travel tips, although may give you yellow fever by accident.

#2 The laid back stoner.

The stoner struggles to remember what happened yesterday (Picture: REUTERS/Jason Redmond)

How to spot: Red eyes, relaxed demeanour and unkempt hair.

Background: Doesn't remember.

Most likely to say: 'I'm glad our student loans are so stingy. If I had any more money to spend I'd be on crack.'

Make friends? Yes, but not close friends.

5 Air Travel Tips That Will Get You The Cheapest Flight Every Time

Although air travel isnt as expensive as it was before, there are times when we dont want to dip into our savings just to afford a flight back home for the holidays.

People try innumerable tricks to get cheap air tickets and search desperately for flight offers on different travel portals. However, that doesnt always get you the cheapest flights, does it?

So, Ive listed five ultimate air travel hacks thatll get you the cheapest flight every single time:

1. Never reveal your travel plans to browsers.

We forget that search engines and analytics are the most powerful tools used to grab customers. Before we really want to book a flight to a particular destination, we have a habit of searching it at least 100 times.

We try different portals, airlines and discount coupons, and were unaware were feeding the browsers our travel plans. This information is handled smartly by travel portals and airlines, which results in unreasonable increases in air ticket fares after a few searches.

I recommend you search for flight offers in incognito mode to ditch your digital trail.

2. Plan your travel in advance to save big.

By big, I mean extensively big. If you know where you are traveling weeks in advance with fixed dates, dont delay in getting your tickets booked. The prices have a striking difference in the span of weeks.

Flights booked before seven weeks will save you a lot of money, and this method has worked well for me in the past. Use this trick as the holidays come up, as they always have fixed dates.

3. Sign up for email alerts.

I really hate newsletters. Yet, I have signed up for countless email alerts to seize the benefits of cheap flight offers.

Signing up for airline alerts helps immensely when you have to make a late booking. Air travel companies let their subscribers know about last-minute availability of flight tickets at a special rate. Make sure you sign up for newsletters from your favorite airline as well as travel portals.

4. Travel-savvy people should choose their credit cards wisely.

Businessmen have altogether different travel needs than most other people. In spite of not having the heart of a globetrotter, they top the list of travel-savvy people.

If you lie in good books at your bank, there is a good chance of saving on air tickets using your credit cards. However, the trick to get maximum advantage is to find out about the credit cards favored by your favorite airlines.

For instance, if Air India is your pick to travel by air, SBI Air India credit card will be a smarter choice. Likewise, all airlines have a special relationship with at least one bank. Choose your credit cards wisely if youre always traveling.

5. Midweek bookings offer slashed prices.

Try booking tickets on a weekend, and just see what happens. Several experiments have proved that booking air tickets between Friday and Monday costs you a lot more than other weekdays.

Try to save your seats on a flight until after Tuesday afternoon to get the best deals. Air travel companies start emailing best flight ticket offers after Tuesdays to fill their seats if theyre not yet filled.

Tried and tested, these tricks will definitely have yousaving money while booking a flight. Make sure you abide by these tactics as much as possible to get the most effective flight ticket offers.

In A World Full Of Travelers Who Do It For The 'Gram, Be A True Explorer

In a world full of Instagram bios that read “traveler,” what separates you from the guy in the harem pants drinking cheap beer outside the 7/11?

Everyone's a traveler nowadays. Don't believe me? Go up to that guy with oversized backpack who's knocking people over as he rudely barges onto the tight train during rush hour, and I'm sure he'll tell you he's a traveler. The same goes for the girl over there with the harem pants. If her prayer hands and yoga poses on the beach didn't reek of “traveler,” then I'm sure you'll find it in her bio or hashtagged somewhere on one of her pictures.

Travel ain't what it used to be.

It's easier now than it ever has before, and everyone's doing it. The world's getting smaller. Flights are cheaper and more accessible. We have millions of apps, travel guides in almost every language and even an in-ear device that instantly translates foreign languages. We have Google Maps, TripAdvisor and more.

We have almost everything we need to get by.

But, there's still no substitute for seeing the world firsthand. That in-ear translator is handy, sure, but it's easy. And easy isn't fun. Easy is staying in the tourist district. Easy is hanging out with other tourists.

And if that's how you travel, then I'm afraid you're going to miss out on a lot. Sure, you might see the sights, eat some good food and, of course, be in an incredible new place. But, the chances of you finding that restaurant in the back corner that has served the same chicken recipe for the last 25 years are slim.

Some travelers spend their whole lives wandering, while most of us just spend a week or two here or there. I've been lucky enough to step foot in 17 countries so far, and I've met some incredible people along the way. Those people taught me some incredibly important things.

Here are five things you can do to experience the world, not just graze the surface.

1. Be considerate.

Nobody likes a cultural imperialist. Instead, acquire some kind of prior knowledge of a country before visiting, or at the very least, be open and polite. Don't get angry when communication breaks down.

Being considerate isn't just abiding by a country's laws and social appropriations, either. Sometimes, it just requires a little common sense. It can be as simple as taking off that big backpack before getting on the train. Because you know, some people are on their way to work and don't need to be knocked over every time you turn to see if you've reached your stop yet.

2. Present yourself well.

How you present yourself says a lot about who you are. Nothing says “I'm a tourist” more than harem pants, a Chang singlet and flip-flops. And there's a difference between eating or drinking a little extra on holiday and being an all-round slob. Of course, after some time on the road, things happen, and you might grub out a bit by the end of the day. But, that doesn't mean you should start the day that way.

There isn't a strict dress code for travelers, you know? You don't need hiking shoes to cover the means streets of Bangkok. You also don't need a CamelBak to spend the day in Milan. Sure, from time to time, you'll have to tweak your outfit to suit your surroundings, but in general, why not roll with what you'd wear at home?

Take a tip or two from locals. Yes, it might be hot, but if they can bare it, you can, too.

3. Stray from the crowd.

Take the road less travelled. The comfort of seeing a familiar face, hearing a familiar accent or connecting with someone from your country when you are abroad can be a good or bad thing. If you're doing it daily, though, you are missing out on the chance to do something totally different.

Sometimes travel is about making yourself uncomfortable. Will taking that tour and seeing the same thing thousands of other people have seen really be something you'll never forget, or just something to check off of a list? Why not make your own tour?

Using technology at your disposal, meet some locals online. If you aren't gregarious enough in person, see the area as they would. Of course, you should be careful about your safety, but chances are, you'll have a much better story to tell afterward.

4. Bring a little piece of home.

Sometimes, travel isn't always seeing all the tourist attractions. Sometimes, travel is just doing what the locals do, said a girl very close to me, after we spent the night at the drive-in. And she was right: Travel doesn't have to be on a tour every second of every day. Sometimes, travel is living the slow life.

Make the city your own. Wander the streets, read a local newspaper, stop for a coffee and eavesdrop on the table next to yours. Take yourself to a movie, go for a run in the park and take the bus or train home. Take things from your routine life and insert them into this new place.

Watch as the city transforms from something foreign into your new home. You'll be surprised by how much more comfortable a city becomes after you treat it like home.

5. Don't forget how to really travel.

Nobody likes a travel snob. Part of what makes a good traveler is knowing there's nothing wrong with being a tourist. Maybe you've ventured into a land you know nothing about. Or maybe, you're just enjoying the beaches for a few days to rest.

While you should stray from the crowd as much as possible, don't let it jeopardize your own travels. The Eiffel Tower might attract a lot of people, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't see it. In fact, it'd almost be a crime to miss.

Sometimes, it's about how you travel those places, one of Asia's largest travel company representatives told me during my last media trip.

And hey, tourist districts aren't entirely bad, either. Often, they're a bit of a laugh. But if you're spending countless days and nights there, then ask yourself the question, “How much am I really seeing?”

If you are yearning for a different experience, try stepping off the beaten path. That's where you'll find me because there really is much more to see. Trust me.

Taliban envoys travel to Pakistan to discuss Afghanistan peace talks

Meeting with Pakistani officials follows insurgent groups contacts with both Afghan and US officials in recent months

Senior members of the Talibans political commission based in Qatar have travelled to Pakistan for discussions with security officials there about possible peace talks with the Afghan government.

The development follows the revelation this week that Taliban officials held two rounds of secret talks with Afghanistans spy chief and a senior US diplomat in the capital of the Gulf state, Doha, this month and last month meetings Pakistan was excluded from despite its long association with the Islamist movement.

Two sources within the insurgency told the Guardian that a trio of Taliban diplomats left Doha on Wednesday with a mission to hold talks with Pakistani officials.

The visiting Afghan Taliban delegation will discuss various topics, including peace talks, and share the latest information with Pakistan, a senior official told the Guardian.

The men are Maulvi Shahabuddin Dilawar, a former ambassador to Pakistan, Mullah Jan Muhammad Madani, a former foreign minister under the Taliban regime in the 1990s, and Mullah Abdul Salam, a former deputy education minister.

The Taliban official said the discussions being held in Pakistan follow successful contacts made with both Afghan and US officials in recent months.

Taliban and the Americans have been engaged in a number of rounds of talks in Qatar, he said. They have made some progress, on a very zigzag path. God willing, we hope further talks will create progress.

Last year Pakistan succeeded in establishing itself as the host and broker of an effort to end the 15-year insurgency in Afghanistan. Islamabad managed to bring Taliban, US and Chinese diplomats around the same table at a breakthrough meeting in the Pakistani hill resort of Murree in July 2015.

But a scheduled second meeting never took place after the Afghan government confirmed that the former Taliban leader Mullah Omar had died years previously and that the movement had been run in his name by Mullah Akhtar Mansoor.

After a bitter leadership fight, Mansoor formally became the Taliban leader but showed little interest in re-engaging in the Pakistan-brokered process.

Mansoor was killed by a US drone strike in May, creating further uncertainty about the chances of peace talks.

Mullah

Although Pakistan has been a key ally for the Taliban during both its rise to power in the 1990s and its re-emergence as an anti-Nato insurgency after 2001, some within the movement resent Pakistani interference in the Talibans affairs.

A Taliban official who talked to the Guardian said the groups current leader, Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, had sought to speed up talks with Kabul and the US.

He said: Pakistan and the rest of the neighbours will be gradually brought on board. Pakistan is an important neighbour and no doubt they will want to be involved.

But a western official who was aware that at least two of the Taliban envoys had travelled to Pakistan said the envoys meeting was unlikely to be related to the recent Doha talks.

The official said it was an attempt by Islamabad to wrest back control and escape immense US pressure and international isolation.

They and a group from Quetta are talking to the Pakistanis about a Pakistan-led process, the official said. This is a separate initiative to escape US and Chinese pressure.

The official said some within the Taliban had objected to the way members of the political commission appear to have been summoned to Islamabad.

The Taliban is split between rival factions, both among and between commanders on the battlefield in Afghanistan and those living inside Pakistan. Bitter divides exist over whether to pursue peace talks or not, as well as over the control of money and resources.

The western official described the current situation within the movement as chaos as normal.

Quoting a Taliban official, the Associated Press reported this week that the head of the Doha office had not taken part in the talks with the Afghan government, reflecting a continuing power struggle within the movement over who should run the Qatar office.

A Pakistani intelligence official declined to comment on the latest claims.

When one thinks of Manila, family dining in 4-star restaurants is probably not what immediately comes to mind. Eng Bee Tin – Perhaps not as glorious in appearance as some of the other fine dining establishments, there is nothing second rate about their food, and a stop to Eng Bee Tin should be high on any travelers list. Specializing in mooncakes, if the very best of the best traditional food is what you savor, do not pass go, head straight to Eng Bee Tin.

We Traveled To Croatia To Find Game Of Thrones Filming Locations In Real-Life

If you are a fan of something, sometimes you have to turn on the “hardcore mode” – just like my husband and I. This summer in Croatia, we traced the filming locations of popular TV series “Game of Thrones”.

Some places were really easy to find – Dubrovnik, for example, is just like one huge filming set. But other spots (like streets in Split) we found either after a looong search or just stumbled upon by an accident. I want to share the result of our “scene hunt” hoping that it will inspire others to do this same!

Are you fond of hiking? Discover paradise at the Abel Tasman National Park

When you are traveling in a country with a coastline we find ourselves on a constant search for the perfect beach. A paradise of golden sand in the middle of impressive panoramas with cliffs and woodland is what we are seeking. What if I tell you that the Abel Tasman National Park gives you a bunch of these spots, one more breathtaking than the other? Let me give you a glimpse of your coast walk of a lifetime.

Abel Tasman National Park

The Abel Tasman National Park is located in the north west of the South Island of New Zealand and stretches along the coastline. It was here that the first Europeans arrived and they couldn't have picked a better place.Abel Tasman

With 22, 5 km² it is the smallest National Park of New Zealand but because of its sheer beauty and accessibility it is one of the most visited. Three quarters of the park are covered by forests, which are called home by a huge variety of birds like the Tui. The coastline offers golden beaches and little islands you can reach by boat.

How to get to the Abel Tasman

The Abel Tasman National Park can be approached from the south or the north of the park. Which way you choose is up to you. As a home base I would recommend Motueka if you come from the south or Takaka for the northern side of the park. Both towns offer different kind of accommodation like campsites, backpackers and hotels. The local supermarkets provide you with everything you need for short visits and long trips into the park. Some people also like to start their Abel Tasman experience from Nelson. Nelson is a bigger city and as such offers a bigger hospitality sector and agencies that organize trips to the park. In my opinion though, you will find everything that you need in Motueka and Takaka as well and have the advantage of reaching the Park in 30 minutes. That will give you more time to see the Park or to sleep in your bed, the choice is up to you.

What to do in the Abel Tasman

The high number of visitors in the park led to an increasing number of agencies, which offer a big variety of activities in and around the Abel Tasman National Park. Day trips or in depth exploring on a long walk, exploring by foot, in a kayak or a charter boat, you got the choice.

The park has several tracks that are perfect for a one day trip. These tracks can be found around the whole park and show the different sites of the park. You can enter the deep woodlands and discover the flora and fauna of the forest. Other tracks will bring you to the coast and a beach that is perfect for relaxing and taking in the sun. My favorite one day track is a loop at the northern corner of the park and it is called the Gibbs Hill track. It will bring you through the forest and up a hill where you have a view over the park. A little bit further and you walk along the coastline and beaches. This 6 hour track gives you an impression of all the different sites of the Abel Tasman National Park. National Park New Zealand

A particular beautiful sight is to admire the park from the water. Many different agencies offer boat cruises along the whole park or, if time is an issue, just visit certain parts. Enjoy the coastline floating by while you cruise. If you get lucky you can spot some seals. If you want to, the boat will drop you off in the park and give you a few hours to explore the surroundings. That way you get to see the remote places of the park without the struggle of walking there.

If you want to use the water way but you feel the need of being active, then you should hire a kayak. You can get guided tours or be all by yourself. If just for a couple of hours or for the full day, both options are definitely worth it. The best spot to start a Kayak tour is Maharau, a small town on the southern end of the Abel Tasman. From there you can get to beaches in the park or cruise around the small islands close by. Seals and penguins call these islands home and in the early autumn the seal cubs are a special attraction.

The Abel Tasman National Park has something to offer for the adrenalin freaks too. Many tourists go sky diving in Taupo, but among experienced sky divers the park is known as the place to be. You get picked up in Nelson or Motueka. After a short drive and a little bit of practice you are ready to go for one of the best moments in your live. You can choose between an 8,000 to up to 16,000 feet drop off. Get ready to feel the wind pushing back your face while you rocket towards the Abel Tasman. I just have one warning, sky diving is truly addictive.

rope bridge Abel Tasman

The most common way to explore the Abel Tasman National Park is still a long walk, which means hiking along the beauty for up to 5 days and sleeping in a tent, hut or more comfortable options along the way. You can get a guided tour at the travel agencies. They take care of your transport to the park and back, a guide and your accommodation among the way. If you would like to sleep in a tent or a fancy apartment with view on the ocean is up to you and how much money you want to spend.

In case we have the mutual feeling that a guide, provided beds and transport just robs you of the adventure, let me tell you more about hiking the long walk on your own.

Abel Tasman coastal track

The Abel Tasman long walks are mostly referred to as the easiest in New Zealand. The main reason for that is that not a single ascend is higher than 200m, so with an average fitness you should be fine. The weather is mild even in the late autumn, so no special equipment or clothing is required.

There are two tracks, the inlet track which leads you through the woodlands and the coastal walk. I don't want to deny the beauty of the inlet rack, but if you have the choice between the two I am definitely advising you to do the coast walk. This track is about 70km in total and got 3 huts and plenty of campsites along the way. You have to book the huts and campsites in advance; especially in the summer booking at least one week before you plan to go is necessary. A bed in a hut will cost you 32 NZD, one night on a campsite costs 16 NZD.

You can do the walk the whole year around. The summer is extremely popular because the beaches along the way are perfect for swimming and relaxing. You can take your time and enjoy the beautiful weather on a campsite at a beach. The downside is that the park is full of hikers and day trippers and you can run into some trouble if you don't book in advance. In the winter and autumn swimming is just an option for the extreme tough ones, but you get to enjoy the landscape in more privacy. An additional upside is, that the clear sky of winter nights offer a clear view and awesome nights at the beaching looking up to the stars.

coast Abel Tasman

The campsites provide a toilet and unfiltered water; at the huts you also have filtered water that needs no treatment for drinking. Several campsites have fire pits and benches. I seriously don't know what else you could ask for.

Most of the guided tours take 5 days to do the whole track. I myself did it in 3 days and was fine with that. It solemnly depends on your preferences. If you like to enjoy the landscape while walking along and a break every 2 hours makes you nervous; I guess you are good to go for a 3 day trip. If you like to take it relaxed and enjoy the beaches for some sunbathing, you should give yourself the time of a 4 to 5 day walk.

You have no chance to stock up on provisions on the way except drinking water, so make sure you have enough on you. Pasta and rice are especially good for such trips because the weight is manageable while it is extremely nurturing. Dried fruits, nut bars and muesli are also good for hiking trips. Don't forget to bring a camping stove if you want to have a warm meal and a coffee in the morning.

And of course don't forget to share this Abel Tasman National Park article with your friends so they get to learn about this paradise too.

An Ideal Itinerary On The Scenic French Atlantic Coast

When visiting France, the go-to places are Paris, the Provence or the Cote-d'Azur. But the culture-rich European country has a lot more to offer than that. From an abundance of fresh seafood, traditional herbs, and spices, to excellent regional wine; follow the coastline of Aquitaine and you can have it all. In fact, the Atlantic coast of France is so vast and diverse that you could write a book about each city along the way. We don't have that much space, of course. We'll try to give you a good idea on how to enjoy the French Atlantic coast, anyways.

Where to go on the French Atlantic coast

This guide will assume an itinerary flying into Bordeaux and then working your way up the coast. I'd highly recommend renting a car, as this will allow you to explore small cities along the way without much hassle. Of course, you're free to change this route however you like. If you do follow along, you'll explore most of Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes. This is a new French region as of January 2016, composed of Aquitaine, Poitou-Charentes, and Limousin. The most southern area is the French Pyrenees, and it's coastline stretches all the way to the stunning Renaissance city of La Rochelle.

Bordeaux

This is our starting point for the journey, but you should plan to see more than the Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport. 18 square km of this city are declared UNESCO world heritage, and with a population of only around 240,000, it's quite small and scenic, compared to major European cities. Think castles, Renaissance buildings, and tiny coffee shops. Despite being quite the distance from the coast, it carries the salty and vibrant flair of a port city. Bordeaux has also put its name on the wine labels of the area and rightly so. Bordeaux and Merdoc wine ranges from excellent table wine to the most prestigious and expensive bottles in the world.

Place des Quinconces

While here, plan a day to visit the major tourist attractions. Start your day with a coffee at the Pont du Pierre and the nearby riverbank, then go for a stroll to the jaw-dropping St. Andres Cathedral and Tower of Pey-Berland. From there, go to the impressive Place des Quinconces, and Monument aux Girondins. On your way, you will pass the historical city center. Here you'll find delightful alleys and cobblestone streets, shopping and small restaurants.

If the timing is right, maybe see the ballet or opera at the Grand Theatre, which is notably one of my favorite experiences in Bordeaux. If not, spend the afternoon in Chatrons, the wine district. You could also slurp some oysters at the district's center, at which lies the Chatrons market square. On Sundays, visit the Organic Market at the Riverfront for some excellent cheese and salami.

In Bordeaux, the list of attractions is endless, and just wandering around will give you a sublime experience of French culture. Beware, it's very easy to fall in love with this city!

Biarritz to Arcachon

On the very southern tip of the French Atlantic coast lies Biarritz, a mere two-hour drive from Bordeaux. Depending on your needs, this is worth a trip.

Biarritz is known for its great surf and splendid beaches, therefore presenting the optimal destination if you've got your board strapped to the top of the car. Of course, it's architectural abundance and seaside stroll also make it attractive for the regular tourist. From here you could also take trips to Bayonne and other nearby towns, or catch the Train De La Rhune from Col de Saint-Ignace (30 min by car), which will take you on an authentic and picturesque ride through the hills. Don't plan too long of a stay, though. I found it cute for only a few days. There can be quite the crowd at the beach, too.

Next stop on my list would be Arcachon, but I'd stretch the three-hour ride along the Atlantic coast out over the day. Instead of taking the A63, which is the quick and pain-free route, bear with the more rural roads and visit the beaches of Hossegor. Stock up on baguette and tarama at the Mimizan street market and have a picnic at the Aureilhan Lake. If there's still time, enjoy the dunes and pine forests in Biscarrosse. If not, don't worry about it and go directly to Arcachon.

Biarritz to Arcachon

In Arcachon, stay in Le Moulle, a smaller part of town, and enjoy the as-far-as-the-eye-can-see beaches, the beautiful pier, and active little Le Moulle Center. After exploring the vivid streets, check out the CHURCH OF NOTRE DAME DES PASSES. When you don't tan on the pristine beaches, take the cheap ferry to Arcachon. For some palatial architecture see the Ville d'Hiver and Basilique Notre-Dame. And in case it's still there once you read this, definitely see the Dune du Pilat. It is the tallest dune in the world, moving landward while burying houses and forests. While a dune might not sound too exciting, I found it's sheer mass to be quite impressive.

Arcachon to Soulac-sur-mer

After a couple of days of leisure and perhaps checking out the rest of Arcachon Bay, our journey continues on further north. This part of the itinerary is my personal favorite.

If you want to take a break throughout the drive, stop for some coffee and croissant in Lacanau. Otherwise skip right ahead directly to Soulac-sur-mer. Plan at least a couple days here to check out the city and surrounding towns.

When you arrive, go for a bucket of mussels and fries, the Atlantic coast equivalent of fish and chips, then enjoy the Plage Central and stroll through the little town. While not exactly the most bustling place on earth, Soulac-sur-mer is a great starting point to explore the nearby villages.

soulac sur mer

There's plenty to see in the area, even if the sleepy villages don't seem too promising at first. The roads are also great for biking and bonfires you can have bonfires on the beaches, but beware, they're not legal everywhere. After taking a look around, dedicate a day or a half to the Montalivet Market, where you can feast on local produce, bread, salami, and cheese, or just indulge in the atmosphere. On the entire French Atlantic coast, this is always a highlight for me. The mix of traditions and relaxing surfer-vibes is so great that I pay multiple visits each stay.

Once you've had enough, visit the surrounding vineyards and wine villages of Pauillac and Saint Estephe. Maybe even take a trip back towards Bordeaux and see Margaux. Out of these cities ship some of the most prestigious wines of the French Atlantic coast, and the rest of France for that matter.

10 Of The Strangest Church Relics On Public Display

People think of churches and other holy sites as peaceful places full of sunshine and fresh air, totally safe and perhaps a little bit dull. But saving souls is serious business to some, especially before the modern age. Furthermore, the business of building sacred sites upon the ruins of pagans can leave behind some unusual ghosts.

From a spring dedicated to a pagan virgin goddess to churches made almost entirely out of human bones, here are holy places that wanted to make sure you get their message and don't mind creeping you out to do it.

10Crypt Of The Chiesa Immacolata Concezione
Rome, Italy

01

This 17th-century church was built by Cardinal Antonio Barberini, a Capuchin Franciscan and brother of Pope Urban VIII, and was designed by Franciscan friar Michele da Bergamo. It houses several high-profile tombs and famous paintings, but its greatest attraction is the chapels in the lower levels.

Five subterranean chapels contain the remains of 4,000 Capuchin friars and poor Roman citizens from the 17th century onward, laid out in an artistic fashion. It took 300 trips from 1627–1631 to cart the carriages filled with bones and mummified remains into place. The earth covering the pavement of the cemetery is said to be from the Holy Land, and a memento mori inscription near the exit reads, “You are what we have been. You will be what we are.”

The remains are arranged in elaborate mosaics and built up into columns, arches, or floral designs. The crypts are even arranged based on the type of bone. There is a Crypt of Skulls, a Crypt of Pelvises, a Crypt of Leg and Thigh Bones, as well as the Crypt of the Resurrection (with a centerpiece painting of Jesus summoning forth Lazarus), and a Crypt of the Three Skeletons (a highly symbolic diorama that reflects on death).

9Basilica Of Santa Croce In Gerusalemme
Rome, Italy

02

Also known as Heleniana or Sessoriana, The Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme (Holy Cross in Jerusalem) stands on what was part of a residential complex owned by Emperor Constantine in the third century. It was once part of the Sessorian Palace, owned by Constantine's mother, Helena. It is said that the palace was built on soil Helena brought back from Jerusalem.

Constantine had the church's basilica built to house a collection of relics brought back from the Holy Land by his mother, specifically relics relating to the True Cross itself. Highlights of this gruesome Christian artifact collection include three supposed pieces of the Cross-a nail, a segment of the elogium (or inscription; in this case the famous INRI “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum”) inscribed upon a board said to come from the Cross, and two thorns alleged to come from the Crown of Thorns. They are all currently housed in the Chapel of Relics, designed by Florestano di Fausto.

If you happen to be a woman, and wish to see these holy objects, you will have to be patient. Women are only allowed inside once a year.

8Capela Dos Ossos
Evora, Portugal

03

Next to the Church of St. Francis in the Portuguese town of Evora is a small chapel called Capela dos Ossos. Like several entries on our list, it's decorated with bones. Uniquely, not only is the interior of the chapel entirely covered with skulls and bones, but if you enter this small building and look up, you will find the remains of two full corpses, a women and a young boy staring back down at you, hanging from chains. It is said that they were the victims of a curse, who took shelter in the chapel. A welcoming sign at the entrance reads, “Nos ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos” (“We bones that are here, for your bones we wait”).

This 16th-century chapel houses the remains of about 5,000 monks, mostly exhumed from nearby cemeteries that had become overcrowded. There are several reasons why churches of the period decorated their walls in such a grisly fashion. One was practical-cemeteries were commonly overcrowded, and there were so few places to store the dead. The second was religious and social. Bones could be put to good use as a warning to the living to prepare one's soul for death.

7Church Of Santo Stefano Rotondo
Rome, Italy

04

On the outskirts of Rome, away from the main thoroughfare of tourists, sits a church called The Basilica di Santo Stefano Rotondo al Monte Celio (Basilica of St. Stephen in the Round on the Celian Hill), or simply, the Santo Stefano Rotondo. It was consecrated by Pope Simplicius between 468 and 483 and is dedicated to Saint Stephen. Built on top of an old Roman site of Mithras-worship (known as a mithraeum), it's a simply constructed church compared to others on this list, really only notable for being the first Roman church to be built with a circular plan, but it houses a unique collection of paintings.

Circling the inner walls are 34 paintings, each describing the death of a Christian martyr. Every one of them is hellishly violent, depicting in near-pornographic detail the tortures inflicted upon the martyrs, all in a perfectly naturalistic and life-like style. The paintings were commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII at the end of the 16th century.

No less a writer than Charles Dickens had this to say about the gruesome collection:

” . . . Such a panorama of horror and butchery no man could imagine in his sleep, though he were to eat a whole pig raw, for supper. Grey-bearded men being boiled, fried, grilled, crimped, singed, eaten by wild beasts, worried by dogs, buried alive, torn asunder by horses, chopped up small with hatchets: women having their breasts torn with iron pinchers, their tongues cut out, their ears screwed off, their jaws broken, their bodies stretched upon the rack, or skinned upon the stake, or crackled up and melted in the fire: these are among the mildest subjects.”

Nafplio, Greece

The Monastery of Aghia Moni is a beautiful, if little-known, complex just outside of Areia near Nafplio in Greece. It currently serves as a Greek Orthodox women's retreat under the auspices of the Bishopric of Argolis.

Aghia Moni is famous for the spring that is located on its grounds, one with seriously pagan connotations. Sources are cagey about it, but most will admit that the monastery was dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi (the spring or source of life). The spring itself is associated with Kanathos, a legendary spring from Greek mythology.

The Greek traveler Pausanias, in his “Description of Greece,” wrote that “In Nauplia [in Argolis] . . . is a spring called Kanathos. Here . . . Hera bathes every year and recovers her maidenhood. This is one of the sayings told as a holy secret at the Mysteries which they celebrate in honor of Hera.”

Hera was the Greek queen of the Olympian Gods, associated with the sky and heavens, women, and marriage. Pausanias is implying that the Hera cultists performed rituals (called “Mysteries”) at the spring that were associated with this legend, and it isn't hard to guess the aim of these rituals. That isn't really the kind of thing Christian Orthodoxy likes to promote, so the spring has fallen into relative obscurity.

5The Barberini Coats Of Arms, St. Peter's Cathedral
Vatican City

At St. Peter's Cathedral in Vatican City is the Baldachin Altar along with its sculpted bronze canopy known as the Baldachin, both of which were sculpted by Gianlorenzo Bernini between 1624 and 1633 under the direction of Pius VIII. One notable feature about the alter is four plinths (columns), decorated with the Barberini family's coat of arms-three bees arranged in a triangle on a blue field resting on an sculptured shield, with a woman's head above it.

A close look reveals that each coat-of-arms, arranged two-to-a-column to make up a series of eight, is slightly different from the one preceding it. Some people believe that the series represents childbirth (the position of the woman's head and the overall shapes and elements certainly look suggestive). Furthermore, take a look at the woman's expression throughout the series; she goes from happy to obviously distressed and back. Furthermore, the shield bulges throughout the series until near the end; the woman's face is replaced with that of a cherub or angel. What is this doing in the middle of a church?

One popular story has it that the sculpture depicts a promise that Urban VIII made to his niece, Giulia Barberini, to build an altar in her honor if her labor was successful. Others contend that it symbolically depicts the earthly struggles of the church in the past until it was “delivered” by the pope, who took great pains to place symbols of his power and family throughout the Vatican.

4The Sheela-Na-Gig Of Kilpeck
Herefordshire, England

Kilpeck Church (The Church of St. Mary and St. David) is located in Herefordshire, England near the Welsh border. It's a simple, Norman-style, two-cell church built atop an older structure with dozens of elaborate and often-grotesque carvings, many of which are heavily influenced by Celtic styles. It's famous for its sexually charged corbel (a weight support for buildings that were commonly sculpted), known as the Sheela-na-gig.

Sheela-na-gigs have been found on structures all over England, Ireland, and France. They depict a squatting woman, possibly associated with “old women” or hags, displaying their grossly exaggerated genitalia for all to see. They are usually depicted in a grotesque or comical manner, and the one at Kilpeck could be said to display both. It's a very old sculpture, dating to at least the 12th century, and possibly belonged to an earlier chapel that once stood on the site.

Popular theories have it that Sheela-na-gigs are a pagan remnant, perhaps associated with various goddess traditions, but when placed in proper context with other carvings found around them, the theory holds little water. They fit in nicely with other Christian motifs common to the region of the time and probably served as Romanesque-era warnings about the dangers of sexual sins. The earliest known figures date to the 11th or 12th century and are usually found on Roman churches. They probably had a Continental origin. Another theory holds that they were created as wards against evil, and there is some evidence for this belief. Corbels have been found above doors or gates out of immediate eyesight, where they could have stood guard as talismans.

As the symbolic significance of Sheela-na-gigs began to wane, they moved from churches to buildings such as castles and gateways. Toward the end of their use, they even showed up as carvings on flintlock pistols of the baroque era.

There are male variations of Sheela-na-gigs, some of which may have been present at Kilpeck Church. Several corbels have been removed there, supposedly by an unnamed Victorian lady who was offended by what they depicted. Whatever the case may be, corbels depicting the male member are relatively common, and they too serve as a warning about the insidious consequences of lust.

3Otranto Cathedral, Tree of Life Mosaic
Otranto, Italy

Consecrated in 1088, Italy's Otranto Cathedral is on this list twice. The first reason is its floor, which is entirely covered by an amazing work of art called the Tree of Life Mosaic. It was commissioned in 1163 by archbishop Gionata d'Otranto and overseen by a monk named Pantaleone with labor provided by local and Norman craftsman and artisans from Tuscany. It was restored in 1993.

Every square foot of the church's floor is covered by a mysterious mosaic that depicts a tree in a style similar to a genealogy illustration. Seen from above, the tree grows into every room of the cathedral, and the effect of the explosion of mythological and religious concepts all depicted together is mind-blowing.

What makes this mysterious work of art so intriguing is the variety of imagery and inscriptions that have no place in a Christian church. Images of the Greek goddesses Diana, Deucalion, and Pyrrha (the main figures in the Greek legend of a great flood) collide with images from Frazer's Golden Bough, a depiction of King Arthur, and zodiac figures, to name only a few. All this is mixed alongside images of Adam and Eve, apocalyptic imagery and creatures, Cain and Abel, and other Christian concepts, but the whole thing is surprisingly free of any specific Christian symbolism. It even mixes in Islamic lore, such as bits of text in Arabic.

The Tree of Life Mosaic demonstrates that its creators were far more educated than the norm for cultures of its time. However they obtained their knowledge, the creators seem to have wanted to record all they knew of the world in one place.

2Otranto Cathedral, The Skull Cathedral
Otranto, Italy

The second reason that Otranto Cathedral makes the list is the skulls. Just off of the main altar is a chapel, and the walls therein house the remains of 800 Christian martyrs. Some of the remains were also moved to the Church of Santa Caterina in Formello at Naples. The walls are neatly lined with the skulls of these martyrs behind glass.

Turkish Sultan Mehmet II had already conquered Constantinople, and 27 years later, he began a plan to take Rome itself by establishing a beachhead on the Italian coast at the port town of Brindisi. Along the way, he changed his mind and decided to strike at Otranto instead . . . a decision that changed everything.

When the invasion hit and the siege began, 350 members of Otranto's garrison fled, leaving only 50 soldiers to hold back the invaders. The remaining townspeople helped against the siege as best they could.

On August 14, 1480, after a two-week siege, the Ottomans broke through and began raping and pillaging and gathered the women and children to be sold into slavery. They then marched around 800 male inhabitants of the town to a place called the Hill of the Minerva (afterward called the Hill of the Martyrs) and gave them a choice: convert to Islam or be beheaded. The men chose death.

Antonio Primaldi (or Pezzulla) was chosen to be the spokesman for the town, and he was the first man to be beheaded. According to Saverio de Marco in his Compendiosa istoria degli ottocento martiri otrantini (The Brief History of the 800 Martyrs of Otranto), when the sword fell, his lifeless, headless body stood up and refused to be moved. An executioner was so awestruck, he converted to Christianity right on the spot and was immediately executed. Yet, despite this miracle the beheadings continued.

The sacrifice of the townspeople of Otranto gave Ferdinand I, king of Naples, the time he needed to eventually repel the Ottoman advance. If not for them, all of Italy and Rome itself could have fallen to Islam. This is why their skulls are displayed and memorialized today, and why, in May 2013, Antonio Primaldi was canonized by Pope Francis as a saint along with all the rest of the Otranto martyrs. The occasion was the largest canonization of saints of all time.

1Sedlec Ossuary
Kutna Hora, Czech Republic

Compared to the Sedlec Ossuary, other churches that house human remains are nothing more than a Disney park. The remains of no fewer than 40,000 skeletons are preserved here.

The Seclec Ossuary is a small chapel located in the suburbs of Kutna Hora, just outside Prague. In 1870, woodcarver Frantisek Rint was appointed to do something about all the bones interred there. The church and its cemetery had become overcrowded over the centuries, thanks both to the church's good reputation (and the alleged presence of soil from Golgotha, marking it as a holy site) and plague. Rint's approach resulted in one of the most unique churches in history.

Bones are everywhere within the church. One of the most impressive displays is the Coat of Arms of the Schwarzenberg family, and the famous chandelier of bones contains at least one of every human bone within it.

Interspaced within the vast display of skulls, ribcages, leg and arm bones, and every other kind of bone are intricate carvings of angels and cherubs. There are candleholders made of bones, and entire walls are lined in skulls. Rint even signed his name in a display of bones.

Words don't really do it justice. This gallery of photos helps give a proper sense of the church.
